Captain W. S. Hardy probably envisioned just such a place in 1880 when he took on the task of surveying a right-of-way through Mississippi's virgin timberland for the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. After the rail line was completed, Hardy returned to this area with his family. Other settlers soon followed. The town they formed in 1884 was named in honor of Hardy's wife, Hattie.
Today, Hattiesburg is the educational, retail, and medical center for more than a quarter million people throughout the southeast portion of Mississippi. It is the home of The University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey College, Camp Shelby, and the Pearl River Community College Vo-Tech Center.
Hattiesburg's Historic Neighborhood District is a 23-block area noted for its large oaks and variety of turn-of-the-century architecture. Throughout the district are many fine examples of Victorian, Queen Anne, and Greek Revival style homes. Lake Serene is nestled among hundreds of acres in the countryside and offers beautiful wooded lots surrounding private lakes. Offering the amenities of the small town lifestyle, Petal and Oak Grove are located near the conveniences of Hattiesburg, yet provide a more rural setting.
